Visual stimming

Visual stimming

is the modality in which self-repetitive views are rendered. This is also common among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) where it is seen as a part of their emontional and sensory integrative processing. Such behaviours can be heterogeneous from individual to individual but are mostly a means of self stimulation, emotion regulation or anxiety or any other similar purpose.

Let us see some examples of visual stimming behaviors:

Flicking lights – Using the actions of turning on and off light switches or observing a light under such flickering conditions.

Hand-flapping in front of the face – Emphasis is placed on hand action involving the face in an up and down movement portrayed in stroking of the hands and arms.

Watching spinning objects - Looking at rotating machines such as spinning wheels and fans and other items that moves.

Staring at objects - Where a person views moving objects or patterns such as a toy moving around or a moving fan.

Visual tracking – A visual behavior whereby particular to an action, lights or movements are gone after or pursued energetically.

Making patterns – Patterns or repetitive visual artefacts can be made in illustrations or drawings for example.

Visual stimming can be defined as a behavior that is often used by autistic people to direct their concentration, manage sensory levels, or even seek enjoyment. From the outside, these activities may appear strange to a person, but in reality, they are mostly harmless and many autistic people engage in stimming as a way to self-soothe. In some situations however, such as when the behavior is excessive, intrusive to others, or interfering with everyday tasks. Then , you can reach out to a doctor or therapist for ways to stop or control it.
